Gas Test Requirements
1. Gas pipe systems must be tested with mercury gauge and a pressure of at least 6 inches of mercury column, or an approved diaphragm gage, testing at t pressure equal to a 6 inches of mercury. (3 to 4 PSI)
2. All gas valves must be in working condition. If the existing valves will hold the test, they may remain. If they must be replaced the new valves must be a type approved by the Canadian gas association (C.G.A. or A.G.A.). Any valve that is not connected to an appliance must be plugged or capped.
3. Flue vents on vented appliances must be in good conditions. This includes the pipe, flashing, storm collar and cap. If they must be replaced, double wall vent pipe system is required. Proper clearance from combustible material must be maintained.
4. Old style bathroom wall heaters may remain if they will hold the pressure test. If it does not hold the test the burner must be removed and the pipe capped in the wall.
5. Water heater temperature and pressure relief valves must function. The discharge pipe must be run full sized to an approved location and terminated between 6 and 24 inches above grade. Piping material may be copper, CPVC, or galvanized steel. NOTE: If the water heater was installed siting on the floor in a garage and this was approved by previous code it may remain as is. Any water heater installed after January 27,1997, must be installed with the burner, pilot, and heating elements and switches at least 18 inches above the floor. NOTE: The gas company will not light water heaters that do not comply with this requirement.
6. If the yard line from the meter to the house is replaced use wither factory wrapped steel pipe (buried 12 inches deep) with primer and UPC approved tape on the joints or polyethylene plastic pipe (buried 18 inches deep) with a 18 gage copper trace wire fastened to the pipe above grade at each end and approved anode less risers at building. Do not cover pipe until after the inspection has been made.
7. An adult (18 yrs or older) must be at home at the time of the inspection.
8. Permit fees are $45.00 for the first 3 gas openings. Every additional gas opening after that is an additional $5.00.
